Board of Education’s Policy Committee Sends Proposals for Public Input

Guilford County, N.C. – The Guilford County Board of Education Policy Committee reported that the following policies are out for public input through July 25, 2026. 

• If approved, Policy 5001 Community School Advisory Councils and Policy 7211 Superintendent Teacher Advisory Councils would be repealed and streamlined into Policy 7210 Staff Involvement in Decisionmaking to reflect the Superintendent's authority to engage advisory councils.  

• Policies 7300 Professional Responsibilities and 7301 Staff Responsibilities have been combined into a consolidated policy proposed to be titled Employee Responsibilities and Code of Ethics. The content has been revised to reflect recent legal changes and to ensure that employees' responsibilities are clear. Policy 7301 Staff Responsibilities is recommended to be repealed. 

• Proposed revisions to Policy 7730 Employee Conflict of Interest conform to the North Carolina School Boards Association Model and clarify what constitutes a conflict of interest in service to Guilford County Schools. The policy has also been updated to reference newer policies regarding contracts with the board, procurement ethics, and relationships between supervisors and subordinates. 

The public can provide input on the proposed policy changes by emailing boardclerk@gcsnc.com. The Board of Education will consider the proposed revisions at its August meeting. 

Additionally, the board approved the following policies: 

• Policy 7240 Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace 

• Policy 7273 Workplace Violence Prohibited 

• Policy 5016/7450 Interscholastic Athletic Coaches  

• Policy 5015 School Volunteers 

• Policy 7710 Membership in Professional Organizations  

• Policy 7720 Employee Political Activities 

• Policy 3620: Extracurricular Activities and Student Organizations 

The board also repealed the following policies  

• Policy 3621 Student Participation in Interscholastic Athletics 

• Policy 5016 Criminal Background Checks on Volunteers
